About the Weighted Average Calculator
A weighted average lets some values count more than others. Enter your values and a matching list of weights to get an average that reflects each item's importance — the basis for grades, ratings, and index scores.
How it’s calculated
Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ(weight).
Example calculation
Values 90, 80, 70 with weights 3, 2, 1 give a weighted average of 83.3 — higher than the simple average of 80 because the 90 counts most.
Frequently asked questions
Do weights have to add up to 100?
No — only the proportions matter. Weights of 3, 2, 1 give the same result as 50, 33.3, 16.7. The calculator divides by the total weight either way.
How is this different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every value equally; a weighted average lets you give more influence to more important values, like a heavily weighted final exam.
