About the Topsoil Calculator
Enter the area and depth to get topsoil volume in cubic yards and the number of bags. Bulk topsoil by the yard is much cheaper than bags for larger jobs.
How it’s calculated
Volume = area × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 cubic yards. Bags = cubic feet ÷ 0.75 (40 lb bag).
Example calculation
A 20 × 15 ft area at 4 inches deep needs about 3.7 cubic yards of topsoil.
Frequently asked questions
How deep for a new bed or lawn?
1–2 inches to top-dress an existing lawn; 4–6 inches of quality soil for new beds or vegetable gardens. Loosen the soil below so the new layer blends in.
Why is the weight approximate?
Topsoil weight changes with moisture and organic content, so treat any tonnage as a rough figure and order a little extra.
