About the Tip Calculator

Working out a tip and splitting a bill shouldn't require mental gymnastics at the table. Enter your bill, pick a tip percentage, and choose how many people are splitting it. The calculator shows the tip amount, the grand total, and exactly what each person owes.

How it’s calculated

Tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100). Total = bill + tip + optional tax. Per person = total ÷ number of people. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount by default.

Example calculation

On a $120 bill with a 20% tip split between 4 people: the tip is $24, the total is $144, and each person owes $36. If you add $9 in tax, the total becomes $153 and each person owes $38.25.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customs vary, but many people tip on the pre-tax bill. This calculator tips on the bill amount you enter and lets you add tax separately to the total, so you can do it either way.

What's a standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 15–20% is common for restaurant service, with 20% or more for excellent service. The quick-select buttons cover the typical range from 15% to 25%.

How is the bill split?

The calculator divides the total (bill plus tip, and tax if added) evenly by the number of people. It's an equal split — for itemized splitting, you'd need to total each person's items separately.
