About the Retirement Income Calculator

Retirement income usually comes from several places at once. This calculator combines Social Security, any pension, a safe withdrawal from your savings, and other income into a single monthly figure — and compares it with your pre-retirement income.

How it’s calculated

Total monthly income = Social Security + pension + (savings × withdrawal rate ÷ 12) + other income. Income replacement = total ÷ pre-retirement income.

Example calculation

$1,900 Social Security plus a 4% draw on $700,000 in savings gives about $4,233 a month before any pension or other income.

Frequently asked questions

How much income do I need in retirement?

A common target is replacing 70–85% of pre-retirement income, since some costs (commuting, retirement saving) fall. Your own number depends on your lifestyle and housing.

Which income is guaranteed?

Social Security and most pensions are inflation-adjusted and guaranteed for life; savings withdrawals depend on markets and how much you draw.

Retirement projections are estimates based on the assumptions you enter and do not guarantee future outcomes. Contribution limits and tax rules change over time — verify current figures and consider speaking with a financial professional.
