About the Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel cost comes down to distance, your car's mileage, and the price of gas. This calculator turns those into the cost of a drive, plus a yearly figure if you enter your annual mileage.

How it’s calculated

Fuel cost = distance ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon. Cost per mile = price ÷ mpg.

Example calculation

A 300-mile drive at 28 mpg with $3.50 gas costs about $37.50 in fuel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my real mpg?

Fill up, reset the trip meter, and at the next fill-up divide miles driven by gallons added. Real-world mileage is often a bit below the EPA sticker, especially in the city.

Does driving style matter?

A lot. Hard acceleration, high speeds, and heavy loads lower mpg, while steady highway driving raises it. Use a realistic figure for your typical driving.
