About the Coast FIRE Calculator
Coast FIRE is the moment your existing investments will grow to your full FIRE number by retirement on their own — so you no longer have to save for retirement, only cover today's living costs. This calculator shows the number and whether you've hit it.
How it’s calculated
Coast FIRE number = FIRE number ÷ (1 + return)^years to retirement. If your current savings meet or exceed it, you've reached Coast FIRE.
Example calculation
Targeting a $1.25M FIRE number 35 years out at a 7% return, you'd need about $117,000 invested today to coast the rest of the way.
Frequently asked questions
What does reaching Coast FIRE let me do?
It buys flexibility — you can switch to lower-paying but more fulfilling work, go part-time, or take a break, as long as you cover current expenses without dipping into investments.
Should I really stop investing?
You can, but continuing to invest brings full FIRE closer and adds a safety margin against lower-than-expected returns. Coast FIRE is a floor, not a ceiling.
